James Fennell's journal of the loss of the brig Somers : written while in prison, 1846-1847.

Autograph manuscript diary written by James Fennell, a crew member of the United States brig Somers during the Mexican War. The diary describes the sinking of the Somers on Dec 8, 1846, during a storm in the Gulf of Mexico near Vera Cruz, and Fennell's experiences in swimming to land, being taken prisoner by Mexicans along with other survivors, and imprisonment in Vera Cruz. Fennell and other prisoners were released on Dec 24. The diary briefly describes their departure from Mexico and return to the United States aboard United States Navy ships.
